This book is an exploration of the role of music, song and poetic expression on the spiritual path. Poetry and song have been used in mystic traditions for thousands of years, and continue to be used today. This practice is considered to have spiritual benefits, but can also be considered as a kind of emotional therapy and exploration of difficult or complex emotions, pulling them out of the subconscious so that their power can utilised in a positive way.

Using examples from the songs of the Bengali mystic and humanist P. R. Sarkar, this work proposes that there is a treasure-trove of wealth and knowledge to be found in mystical songs, and explores the concept of mystical music as a form of explaining and understanding human psychology and the processes of channelising and deepening human emotion, as well as illustrating complex metaphysical ideas in a way that connects directly with the human heart. Sadness, joy, love and doubt weave themselves together as expressions of the processes of human growth, all being equally necessary if we can only come to understand their inner significance.
