This story depicts a young girl’s experience with selective mutism (an anxiety related condition in which the sufferer becomes mute in select situations - typically at school).

The protagonist of this story enjoys a relatively happy childhood, and even many aspects of school. However, her inability to speak at school presents hurdles and challenges. She uses non verbal forms of communication in order to navigate her school day. Ultimately, the girl yearns to feel she belongs. The last thing she wants is to feel different. Unfortunately, there is one particular question that she dreads. The question of, ‘why’, shines a harsh spotlight on the girl’s difference. Ultimately this is a story of a girl who despite adversity, never gives up hope.
