Regarding Rule 99 is a collection of historically inspired poems by high school students at the University School of Nashville. Stemming from an interdisciplinary, project-based learning course, students engaged in the literary study of poems of time and place, selected a local historical event, conducted archival research, and wrote, revised and published an anthology based on these experiences. Regarding Rule 99 explores the Dutchman’s Curve train wreck of 1918. The narrative, lyric and portrait-like persona poems offer a nuanced view of a Southern city in the midst of a gruesome tragedy during WWI and the Jim Crow era. These young writers present the deadliest train crash in America through well-crafted poems that novelist Ann Patchett describes as a work of compassion and artistry that fills the reader with wonder.
