Ireland since 1800: Conflict and Conformity

Much has happened in Ireland in the decade since this successful book first appeared. Now Theodore Hoppen has updated and extended his text to incorporate recent events (both north and south of the border) and the latest scholarship on the last two centuries of Irish history. The text retains its distinctive mixture of chronological and thematic approaches (each of its three chronological sections - 1800-1850, 1850-1921, 1921 onwards - is treated in parallel chapters on politics, society and religion), and Professor Hoppen’s agreeably unstuffy style.
