First of all, this book is excerpted from a larger work that we publish: Saints and Servants of God: The Lives of S. Rose of Lima, Bl. Colomba di Rieti, and of S. Juliana Falconieri. Although you can’t tell a book by its cover, our cover should give you some idea of how our book stacks up against other books about St. Rose. We have painstakingly illustrated both her life and her environment with numerous images.Saint Rose of Lima was a spiritual daughter of S. Catherine of Siena, and a Dominicans sister of the Third order, a virgin penitent who followed St. Catherine’s spirituality very closely and with similar results. The Lives of St. Rose of Lima, the Blessed Colomba of Rieti and of St. Juliana Falconieri , was originally published in London by Thomas Richardson and Son in 1863 as part of a series initiated by and edited by Frederick Faber of the Oratory. This excerpt has been re-typeset and enhanced with seventy-four images.
In the centuries immediately following her death St. Rose in particular captured the interest and imagination of the Church, especially in Latin America. We have only been able to capture a fraction of the art which her life inspired. Incredibly, doing full justice to that out-pouring would require a volume of three hundred pages or more. The sketches in this biography are taken mostly from Michael A. Fuentes, Lima, Sketches of the Capital of Peru and are intended to be evocative of Lima as St. Rose would have known it. Therefore, the persons sketched are types rather than persons known to St. Rose. The paintings devoted to her capture her spiritual life and Heavenly destiny, but Lima was -per the sketches- a very earthy place, the place where she nevertheless became a great saint.
