There are places in this world where nature takes a different turn, and the result seems not of this world. That would describe Yellowstone National Park. Geysers spewing hot steam into the air, colorful hot springs hosting extreme bacteria that thrive where life should not, bubbling mudpots seemingly belonging to another planet, and a landscape that speaks of cataclysmic events from Earth’s past.
Yellowstone National Park is a place where the natural meets the supernatural. Ancestors of Native Americans first encountered this enigmatic region thousands of years ago. Inspired or even fearful of its mystic features, they frequented the area for ceremonial worship and as a bountiful hunting ground for bison and bighorn sheep. So out of the ordinary is this place that stories that reached Euro-Americans back east were, at first, received with skepticism, but that later gained credibility and led to the establishment of Yellowstone as the nation’s first national park for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.
This book is a photojournal of a contemporary journey through Yellowstone National Park. On this journey of rediscovery, we explore stories of the distant geologic past, the unique microbiology, evidence for early humans, and the events leading to the establishment of this national park.
