Three orphans risk everything to escape their evil aunt, but is living on their own putting them in worse danger?
Growing up in a small town on the banks of the Mississippi would seem to make for an ideal childhood, but that isn’t the case for eleven-year-old Hannah and her brothers. Life with evil Aunt Olga has gone from very bad to worse, so now Hannah must make a tough decision. She knows she can’t ask for help. Olga has continually warned Hannah that if she or her brothers dare to complain about her, they will most certainly be put in separate foster homes. Above all else, they have to stay together. But Hannah is protective of her younger brothers and can’t bear to see them hurt another day. The only way out is to run!
They pack up their meager belongings, more food than Olga ever allowed them, and run away to a world of freedom and adventure. But as food runs low and nights grow colder, they aren’t sure who they can trust so they stay hidden-even from those who might help.
A page-turner for ages 8-12, or for any age reader who loved The Boxcar Children, The Penderwicks, Small as an Elephant, The Family Under the Bridge, or Mandy.
