Qunad un pere francais travaillant a Paris decouvre que les troupes alliees de D-Day ont debarque a 10km de la ferme ou se trouve sa famille, il saisit un velo et avec sa femme, pedalent, bombardes et miltrailles, versCaen, en sauvant la cathedrale de Lisieux sur la route, pour trouver quand ils arrivent que le front se trouve entre la ville et la ferne. Apres maintes essaies de penetrer les lignes, ils passent le mois de juin en participant a la defense civile pendant la bataille et la destruction de Caen. Une fois la ville liberee, ils retrouvent la famille sainw et sauve. Le recit contient des franches appreciations des troupes canadiennes (car il s'agit de Juno Beach), americaines, brittanques, et allemandes, et aussi un tour du paysage ravage de la Normandie. Une histoire personnelle, passionante, humaine, et historique.
