My Father’s Journey with Dementia is a compassionate look at my father’s life journey and the sudden twist of faith after being diagnosed with Vascular Dementia and the parallelism with Alzheimer’s. Leading up to the diagnosis, we all knew, even Dad understood that something was happening to him. It was heart wrenching to watch as the disease progressed, but at some point, one realizes that it is most important to enjoy the moments that you do have, to keep up a positive energy and pray that Dad is comfortable and happy.
Towards the end of his life, it was difficult. Dealing with the realization that Dad was nearing the end of his life, he was 90, but the end was being rushed by the disease. The ups and downs of Alzheimer’s and Dementia is part of the process. Seeking help, support and friendship, is key to caring for your loved one. One special group of ladies affectionately known as ‘The Deli Girls’, were my mother’s lifeline. There is now an Alzheimer’s support group public FaceBook page called ‘The Deli Girls’.
