Rarely seen paintings, sculptures, works on paper and quilts by artists from the African American South
Featuring more than 75 works in various mediums, A Different Mountain explores behind-the-scenes dimensions of Southern African American artists’ beliefs, working methods and aesthetic ambitions, as well as their relationships with each other and with a common patron, the pioneering collector William Arnett, founder of the Souls Grown Deep Foundation.
Along with a useful introduction to the field and its emergence into wide appreciation, the book offers extended captions to guide readers inside the images and the artists’ own worlds. Curated for Marlborough Gallery by Matthew Arnett and Paul Arnett, in honor of their father’s cultural vision, it includes works by the artists and African American quilts from William Arnett’s personal collection.
Artists include: Lonnie Holley, Thornton Dial, Purvis Young, James Son Thomas, Mary T. Smith, Joe Minter, Hawkins Bolden, Joe Light and Ronald Lockett.
