The reading and study of God’s Law is foundational to understanding all of Scripture. In a very real sense, all the Old Testament beyond the Law of God is an elaboration or explanation of that Law, so much so, in fact, that the New Testament can speak of both the books of the prophets and the sacred writings as the Law of God (cf. 1 Cor. 14.21, Jn. 10.31). And when we consider that Jesus came not to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it, and that those who trust in Him are called to walk as He walked, this makes the reading and study of God’s Law important for a right understanding of the New Testament as well.
