H. F. 4, ELM COURT, TEMPLE, E. G., May 3rd, 1897. PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. THE object of this work is to present to the reader the Principles and Practice of the Law of Libel and Slander in a concise form and, considering the large and increasing number of actions of this bind with which the Courts are occupied, it is hoped that the bookmay prove useful to the Legal Profession. The Law is stated in the form of Propositions, followed by Explanatory Notes, in the preparation of which the original authorities have in every case been consulted. Several cases of impor tance which have been decided in the last few years have received special notice. Appendix A contains some practical suggestions on the conduct of a Civil Action, together with Forms and Pre cedents. In Appendix B will be found all the Statutes bearing on the Law of Libel and Slander, with references under each section to particular pages in the text. VI PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. I wish to express my obligations to my friend Mr, BLAKE ODOERS, the author of the well-known standard work on this subject, for occasional hints and kindly advice. I have also to thank my friends Mr. A. CLARKE WILLIAMS, LL. D., and Mr. A. T. CARTER, D. C. L., Barristers-at-Law, for their kindness in revising the proof-sheets. For the copious Index I am indebted to my friend Mr. Gr. H. TAYLOR WHITEHEAD, M. A., Barrister-at-Law. H. F. 4 ELM COURT, TEMPLE, E. G., April 3rd, 1893. CONTENTS.
