Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn’t happy about leaving her friends for Bahia de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahia de la Luna.
Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister’s sake - and her own.
Raina Telgemeier has masterfully created a moving and insightful story about the power of family and friendship, and how it gives us the courage to do what we never thought possible.

Adored graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier introduces magical realism to her work in her wonderful new book, Ghosts. The story follows Cat and her family as they move to a new town in the hope that a gloomier climate will be beneficial to her younger sister Maya, who has cystic fibrosis. The weather may be foggy but Bahia de la Luna proves to be a very spirited place, especially on the Day of the Dead.
Telgemeier’s books have so much energy it is impossible not to share deeply the experiences and emotions of her characters. Cat’s fears about the wellbeing of her sister, the apprehensions that come with a change to an entirely new environment, the fun of friendships, and the warmth of a loving family and community are all vividly and smoothly captured in Ghosts. It’s a beautiful, enriching book, highly recommended for all readers aged 9–14.
Combining fun, humour and real emotions, these graphic novels are loved by Readings staff and great for kids ages 9-13.
