In recent years nonlinear differential equations of the type indicated by the keyword ‘soliton’ have been appearing in a surprising variety of branches of pure and applied mathematics and physics. The articles presented give a representative sample both of the basic mathematical theory and of some of the applications of soliton equations. The authors have written their articles in a manner that should make them comprehensible to a wide audience.
