English artist Donald Maxwell’s entertaining and straightforward approach begins with the basics: We will draw a brick. Anybody can draw a brick. Topics include basics of perspective, light and shade, and composition; how to direct a picture’s focus; and the challenges of ink as a medium, illustrated by wonderful studies of boatyards, bridges, churches, and farms. A concluding gallery features additional selections by masters of pen-and-ink landscapes. AUTHOR: The work of English author Donald Maxwell (1877 1936) combined his interests in travel, writing, and creating art. He provided written content as well as illustrations to The Yachting Monthly, The Graphic, and the Church Times. Author of over 30 books, Maxwell excelled at travel writing, particularly on sights in the south of England. His sketchbooks document his many trips, and he has achieved a solid reputation for his charming renderings of specific locations, both in ink and watercolor.
