Wild Boy Willie is based on a true story about Willie, the author and Illustrator's grandson who spent a year on Uncle Bill's farm in the South Island high country of New Zealand. There, Willie learnt to ride and to hike and help round up
sheep with Bill on his bike. Willie's two companions on his adventures were Jess and Don, Bill's dogs. A great love of the outdoors were instilled in Willie during this time and he gained many skills. When his parents returned from the Antarctic they swapped stories and saw how Willie had been taught well by Bill of things learnt in the Wild.
