Social Identities: A Multidisciplinary Approach a ttempts to make sense of the increasingly complex ways in which we attempt to define ourselves and others. It recognises that we are not simply individuals, or members of a certain class or a certain nationality. Rather, each of us comprises a rich blend of various identities. The volume presents twelve in-depth explorations of the social and political processes by which our identities are formed, with each chapter providing an insight into a specific aspect of identity formation. The volume includes chapters on class, gender, sexuality, race, nationality, the media, music and on cyber-identity. Many of the chapters are written by academics and researchers whose work is at the leading edge of enquiry into identity. The volume provides not only an eclectic spectrum of the forms of identity and influences through which identities are formed, but also critical treatment of the theoretical tools used to understand these phenomena. The authors of this volume are drawn from a number of subject backgrounds including cultural studies, sociology, media studies, social policy and history.
