Women and the Colonial Gaze

Women and the Colonial Gaze examines the way images of women have been used by colonizers and subject peoples to define the colonial relationship. Unique features include essays on pre-modern imperialism, colonization within Europe, imperialism by non-European powers and intellectual imperialism by authors and scholars. These essays suggest that gender’s use as a tool in the imperialist context is much older and more comprehensive than previously suggested.
