Life Lessons from 1 Samuel

The history of the Israelites was one filled with many ups and downs. The people had been led out of Egypt under Moses but had been forced to wander in the wilderness after refusing to enter Canaan. Victory in the Promised Land came under Joshua some forty years later, but the Israelites couldn't take all of the land. This led to the period of the judges-a cycle in which the people fell into idolatry, cried out to God for deliverance, were given a warrior to free them from the threat, and then slipped back into idolatry. By the time the last judge, Samuel, was nearing the end of his life, the people were crying out for a change. They rejected God as their perfect king and instead settled for an imperfect human replacement.
Join beloved author Max Lucado as he explores the story of the Israelites in 1 Samuel and how God raised up an unlikely shepherd named David to be their human king. As you read, study, journal, and discuss the book of 1 Samuel, watch for these key themes that Max will unpack throughout the book:
God still speaks to his people today and uses them for his purposes in the world. God desires our faithfulness and obedience to him above our sacrifices to him. The Lord is looking to raise up people who share his heart and love for others. No obstacle is too overwhelming when we realize that God is on our side.
Life Lessons with Max Lucado brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God's Word. Each lesson includes:
