Tussen 1967 en 1973 was Fred van der Wal lid van de vaste groep Realisten van Galerie Mokum. Hij was daar enige tijd bevriend met de firmant van Dieuwke Bakker Mike Podulke, maar ook met nu vergeten schilders als Teun Nijkamp en Chris van Geest. De eerste jaren van Galerie Mokum waren dynamisch. Vanuit de gesubsidieerde staatskunstenaars was de tegenwerking door overheid, tekenleraren, musea en collegas optimaal.
