Esprit erudit, il est presente comme linguiste, etruscologue, astrologue, devin, pythagoricien et meme, selon la these ancienne et aujourd'hui discutee de Jerome Carcopino, le fondateur et le maitre d'un ordre pythagoricien a Rome, le sodalicium Nigidiani. Il fut le premier neopythagoricien latin, vers -60, a Rome, presque en meme temps que le grec Eudore d'Alexandrie qui fondait lui aussi le neo-pythagorisme mais a Alexandrie, vers -40.
