Un testo che in parte e possibile definire di formazione. Un giovane: Marcello, che attraverso una brutta esperienza riesce a comprendere, che vi puo essere una diversa visione della vita. Marcello e un nobile e nonostante abbia vissuto per anni accanto ai suoi domestici e nelle sue scorribande abbia frequentato nelle osterie uomini di cultura modesta, solo a un certo punto riesce comprendere la visione che queste persone umili hanno della vita. Sono i comportamenti e i sentimenti di queste persone che, pur frequentate assiduamente lui ha sempre ignorato, a un certo punto per i fatti che accadono, riescono a fargli comprendere che cio che governa la vita, oltre alle regole che ogni tribu uomini. L'ironia che sempre viene a far parte, quando si descrive un certo mondo, qui si diletta a confondere una possibile tragedia, descrivendola in tutti i suoi atteggiamenti grotteschi e comici.
