Noerine Kaleeba has made a great difference to the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS and to their families, both in her native Uganda and around the world. In 1987, after her husband was diagnosed with AIDS, she co-founded TASO, Africa's pioneering AIDS support group. Under her leadership, TASO became a global model of HIV prevention and of AIDS care and support. In 1996 Noerine joined the newly created Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in Geneva where she served ten years as adviser on partnership and community mobilization. She is currently an independent consultant based in Uganda, and has served on the boards of many international organizations. Among the many publications on HIV/AIDS she has written or contributed to is an autobiography titled We Miss You All: AIDS in the Family, and her work has been recognized by numerous awards and distinctions.
