Chowdhury Ishraq Uz Zaman served in the armed forces of Bangladesh as a doctor for more than fifteen years, a good part of which was as an orthopedic surgeon. This is an account and an analysis of both the author’s interactions with certain elements in an organizational entity as well as situations and circumstances that influenced a few outcomes. He recalls moments of personal accomplishments and fulfillment, besides also dwelling on instances of dilemmas and disappointments that he encountered during his career. The author examines how a few in any organization, with seemingly misplaced priorities and values, have threatened to undermine the organization’s dignity and distinction, thereby jeopardizing its institutional growth, development and reputation. He further explores how the medical institution, which he was a part of, could have functioned more efficiently and effectively. Among other things, the author also ponders whether or not the overall assignments of blame, in general, for medical mishaps were always entirely fair or justified. And finally, he also reveals the details behind the process of his resignation, and the struggles he experienced in getting it accepted. This critical, analytical and thought-provoking narrative is filled with factual accounts, astute observations, objective criticisms, deserving compliments, realistic recommendations and refreshing humor.
