His case gained notoriety after a documentary, Paradise Lost (HBO, 1996), exposed the biased nature of the trial and exposed Echols as the charming and tragic figure at its centre. Lori Davis was a landscape architect living in New York when she wandered into a showing of the film. When she left she wrote him a letter.
