This book arose out of the author’s personal experiences in the People’s Republic of China and the contrast between life he saw there in 1985-6 and the imposition of martial law in 1989. Upon returning to the US the author reread Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM and compares Orwell’s optimism about the economic feasibility of collectivism with the empirical evidence we now have regarding the failure of collectivist economics and the advantages of private enterprise and market-based pricing. This book can be used in any introductory economics course to stimulate discussion and cover basic principles of collectivist economics and and the free market system.
