The single most popular graduate degree today is the Masters in Business Administration, with more than 10,000 students receiving the degree annually. But the range and quality of MBA programs vary widely. What Every MBA Knows presents the key ideas that are essential to a mastery of any MBA program, whether at Northwestern’s Kellogg or George Mason University. The book is organized according to the subject matter of the MBA core curriculum. There are broad scope topics such as strategy and leadership, functional areas such as accounting and marketing, and key disciplines of any MBA toolbox such as managerial economics, decision analysis, and operations. The author also shows how all these areas fit into today’s regulatory environment and global economy. The book discusses these topics in a conceptual way but maintains a practical outlook. Written in an easily accessible style with many applications and illustrations, What Every MBA Knows delivers the important concepts at the core of an MBA education. Topics covered include: - Leadership and teamwork including six sigma, team building, management v. leadership, and delegation - Accounting and corporate finance including financial statement analysis, CAPM, derivative and options, and resource allocation - Managing human resources including job design, employee empowerment, and group behavior - Operations management including supply chain management and removing bottlenecks - Designing and managing organizations including organizational culture, organizational architecture, and managing performance - Technology management including IT infrastructure and encryption - Ethics and responsibility including self-regulation v. government regulation and positive and negative rights - Global strategy including emerging markets, export pricing, and technology transfer This is a contributed book, but the author will provide a strong and active hand in shaping each chapter to fit a set formula and template, thus ensuring a consistent structure and tone throughout. While he will draw on professors from his own graduate business school (UC-Irvine) for some chapters, he will also use professors from such well-known business schools as Chicago, Harvard, Wharton, etc. Each contributor will write in his own areas of expertise.
