What we're reading: Zevin & Burton
Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on, or the music we’re loving.
Aurelia Orr is reading Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
When Sadie and Sam meet as children in the gaming room of a hospital, they quickly bond over their love of video games. As they grow into adulthood, you witness the ups and downs of friendship; the jealousies, the miscommunication, watching one succeed as the other fails, falling in love, and falling out of it again.
I'm not a huge fan of video games, but this book had me glued to the page, and I was itching to get back to it every time I wasn't reading. Like video games, Sadie and Sam are multidimensional and full of complexity; they are loveable, infuriating, deeply flawed, and make plenty of mistakes. But unlike in video games, if something doesn't go your way, there's no reset button to begin again. Life must carry on, revealing the ever-flowing nature of love and friendship. Over the span of 30 years, you grow alongside the characters, becoming as intimate with their thoughts as you are with your own, and ache to be with them again long after you've finished reading.
Lucie Dess is reading DJ Baby by DJ Burton
This week was my nephew’s second birthday. Of course, I gifted him a huge stack of books. Amongst the stack was DJ Baby, which was an instant favourite! It’s such a fun board book with colourful artwork and turntables that actually move; the interactive nature of the board book is perfect for promoting hand coordination. Of course, it was difficult to read the book to him as he just wanted to play with the turntable, but I can already see Djing in his future and I can’t wait to be front row at his first gig!
DJ Baby is currently reprinting and we expect stock to arrive during May.
