What we're reading: Winn, Reid & Scholte

Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on, or the music we’re loving.

Mark Rubbo is reading The Wild Silence by Raynor Winn

I picked up a copy of a book we have on the bargain table called The Wild Silence by Raynor Winn.

Raynor’s husband, Moth, has a brain disease that can’t be cured. Raynor has a strong connection to nature and finds power and solace in it and when she is offered the task of rewilding a plot of land in Cornwall she finds immense hope in the project. A beauty of a book.

Outgoing member of the Teen Advisory Board David Dodson is reading Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

There’s been nothing but universal praise for this book, and I can’t help but add to it. Kiley Reid has crafted a narrative that feels both current and thought provoking. The book’s central action – beginning when African-American Emira is unjustly apprehended by security whilst babysitting – is beautifully rendered by the shifting perspectives of Emira and Alix, her employer, a wealthy, self-proclaimed feminist. Reid seeks to convey the potential hollowness of these kinds of labels, explicitly exploring class, race, and gender politics in modern society.

Outgoing member of the Teen Advisory Board Claire Heazlewood is reading League of Liars by Astrid Scholte.

As good as Astrid Scholte’s other books! It has the mystery of The Vanishing Deep (not murder-mystery but rather the mysterious nature of their world) and the suspense of Four Dead Queens. I really enjoyed the courtroom drama (it was full of jargon, but I have participated in a mock trial competition, so I did understand it). It also contains a thought-provoking twist but I won’t spoil it here!
