What we're reading: Pouliot & Heisey
Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on, or the music we’re loving.
Chris Gordon is reading Underground Lovers by Alison Pouliot
This week I was fortunate enough to meet a fungi lover and ambassador for all things underground, Alison Pouliot. Pouliot is the author of Underground Lovers – a book that celebrates the nature of fungi and the impact this extraordinary organism has on our eco system. Her book is a lively examination of its allies and enemies, both human and not. Each chapter explores a section of the world, a mushroom or growth that i have never heard of, and a laugh out loud anecdote from the authors own life (Why not grab a lift in a hearse with Goths anyway?).
I was entertained and enthralled reading this book and I promise I have never read a book from cover to cover on fungi before. I didn't think it was my jam, but it turns out ... well, it turns out it should be everyone's jam. Fungi is literally the glue that keeps us together. Read Underground Lovers to find out more.
Lian Hingee is reading Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey
Like, oh, basically everyone I know, I was a huge fan of the feel-good comedy Schitt’s Creek, so it’s no surprise that I’m really, really enjoying Really Good, Actually, the debut novel from Schitt’s Creek screenwriter Monica Heisey. This story about a 28-year-old woman who finds herself suddenly, shockingly, divorced after just 608 days of marriage is – unsurprisingly – bitingly funny, full of razor-sharp dialogue, some terrific home-truths, and a diverse cast of lovable characters.
