What we're reading: Hartnett, Miller & Scholte
Each week we bring you a sample of the books we’re reading, the films we’re watching, the television shows we’re hooked on, or the music we’re loving.
Tye Cattanach is reading Go Home, Cat! by Sonya Hartnett, illustrated by Lucia Masciullo
Isn’t liquorice a delicious word? If you didn’t think so before, you certainly will once you have revelled in the magical new picture book from the uber talented Sonya Hartnett. A gorgeous (and long awaited) sequel to Come Down, Cat! - Go Home, Cat! sees us reunited with Nicholas and his ever mischievous furry best friend.
Nicholas has found a coin while digging in the garden and sets off to buy liquorice, ordering his cat to stay home. It’s not long before he hears a familiar “marl” right behind him… Lucia Masciullo has marvellously illustrated _Go Home, Cat!_using a much softer, autumnal palette than its predecessor. The beautifully drawn background, houses and other characters in the village, along with Nicholas and Cat themselves, make one feel as though we are taking a stroll through a timeless Italian village.
As with all Sonya Hartnett books there is enormous satisfaction to be had in the use of language and sentence structures, and Go Home, Cat! makes for a delightful read aloud experience. Highly recommended for ages 3+ (preferably with a bag of liquorice at hand)
Gabrielle Williams is reading Circe by Madeline Miller
I’m only about 30 pages in, so it’s probably too early for me to give detailed feedback, but this book has been included on so many prize Lists, and has had so many gushing reviews, I simply had to have it.
Circe is the daughter of Helios (the Titan God of the Sun), but she isn’t powerful like her father, or viciously alluring like her mother, or content to live in paradise and be languidly beautiful like the rest of her brothers and sisters. Instead she has a growing need to see humans and make a difference in the world.
Stunningly, magically, written, so far I’m loving it.
Lucie Dess is reading League of Liars by Astrid Scholte
I adored Astrid Scholte’s first two books - Four Dead Queens and The Vanishing Deep - so I was so excited to pick up League of Liars.
I was immediately hooked reading this book! It’s fast-paced and there are lots of twists and turns. Just like FDQ and TVD, League of Liars switches POV between the four main characters who are all fully dimensional and had their own needs and desires.
I liked that the story doesn’t revolve around romance. Instead, there’s more of a focus on family and friendship with just a touch of lurveeeee. It also explores loss and grief.
