What we're reading: Fosse, Lispector & Footman
Each week our wonderful staff share the books that they've been enjoying.
Emma Clarke is reading A Shining by Jon Fosse and The Passion According to G.H. By Clarice Lispector
I've been reading A Shining and The Passion According to G.H., both of which are fantastic! I've paired these books together as they are both books that get at that great Kafkian quote: 'I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound us ... If the book we're reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for?'
These books deal with the existential difficulties of the self and the consequences of revelation. Lispector is especially disturbing in this way, as she is explicit in her character's feverish tumblings towards madness, or perhaps enlightenment, it's never quite clear. I would recommend either of these books for those looking to stretch their literary legs a bit, and who want to venture out into the unknown.
Nicole Vasilev is reading Mongrel by Hanako Footman
This novel captivated me from start to finish! Footman draws readers into the lives of three seemingly unconnected women whose paths gradually converge in unexpected ways. Touching on the relationships of mothers, daughters and sisters, as well as the consequences of racism and misogyny, it's not always an easy read; but it’s one worth taking your time with and soaking up, as you begin to understand the different experiences faced by the three central women.
Mongrel is my favourite read of this year so far, and it is a novel that will linger with me for a long time yet. I highly recommend it for readers who are looking for a beautiful and engrossing read.
Pilgrim Hodgson is reading Soft Stir magazine
Coming out of Sydney, Soft Stir is a lushly produced independent magazine exploring art, culture, music, and philosophy through the eyes of diverse emerging creatives. Their 3rd issue features over 45 contributors exploring what happens when ideas, people or objects collide. I especially enjoyed the cover story – a conversation hosted by Amit Noy between three dance icons, covering how their differing practices impact their identities, communities and contemporary Australian culture.
Limited stock is available at our Carlton store, along with a clutch of other local magazines that will reintroduce you to the luxury that is passing a few hours at a cafe with a fresh mag.
