The Lonely Lighthouse of Elston-Fright: An Elston-Fright Tale by Reece Carter, illustrated by Simon Howe

The second stand-alone story set in the town of Elston-Fright features Flip-Little and his magical friends, who must figure out why the ancient weather ghouls, the Poltergusts, stole their friend Simon the spider. But first they must solve the mystery of the Lighthouse’s missing light. This is a wacky, magical world with delightful characters that fantasy readers aged 9+ will adore.

One of the best fantasy books I’ve read in years. The kids are perfect – not too naïve, not too ‘adult’ – and the world and lore are both so complete, I believed every word I read. — Dani Solomon

To and Fro by Anton Clifford-Motopi

When Sam meets his dad for the very first time at age 12, it brings up questions around his identity. Is he a white kid with a Black dad? Or a Black kid with a white mum? He’s also trying to cope with all the other 12-year-old stuff, like dealing with embarrassment and performing in the school concert. This is a funny coming-of-age story for readers aged 11+.

I was completely invested in 12-year-old Sam’s quest to understand his appearance and identity and – ultimately – belong. This believable, hilarious depiction of family relationships had me barracking for Sam from start to finish! — Athina Clarke

Get Your Act Together, Doris Kozlowski by Jo Dabrowski

Doris Kozlowski just wants to be normal. But with her family, it is not easy. When her best friend dumps her at the beginning of Year 6, she decides that winning the talent contest will be her path to redemption. Of course, nothing works out as planned, but maybe, just maybe, it will work out even better. This is a hilarious story for readers aged 9+.

This book had me laughing out loud. Doris’s babcia (grandma), a woman who needs to be angry to relax, had me in stitches. I found myself cringing alongside Doris and cheering her on as she battles her zany family and tricky friendships. — Dani Solomon

Wurrtoo: The Wombat Who Fell in Love with the Sky by Tylissa Elisara, illustrated by Dylan Finney

Wurrtoo lives a solitary life on Kangaroo Island, but dreams of travelling to the mainland to ask the sky to marry him. When he meets Kuula the koala, they decide to travel together and discover a wonderful friendship, while meeting many other animals and facing danger at every turn. This delightful journey will be enjoyed by readers aged 8+ and as a charming read-aloud for younger children.

Irresistibly playful, charming and funny, this epic adventure of courage, survival and friendship is everything a wonderful story for children should be. The gorgeous and irrepressible Wurtoo will make you laugh and, ultimately, steal your heart! — Athina Clarke

Spies in the Sky by Beverley McWilliams

Set during the Second World War, this action-packed adventure is based on the true story of carrier pigeons carrying vital messages for the war effort. Told from the perspective of Royal Blue, a pigeon who has led a privileged life but now must endure hardship and danger, this delightful story will appeal to animal and adventure lovers. Perfect for independent readers aged 10+ or as a read-aloud for ages 8+.

An exceptionally sweet, engaging and well-crafted war story. Jam-packed with dizzying adventures and heartening scenes that explore bravery, kindness, empathy and friendship, this novel skillfully blends hard historical facts with delightful humour. — Miranda La Fleur

Batthew Aromascent and the Missing Corpse Flower (Batthew Aromascent, Book 1) by Ella Mulvey & John Roebuck

Five years ago, Batthew’s parents disappeared in mysterious circumstances, leaving him sole heir to their fragrance company. When their famous corpse flower is stolen just before it is about to bloom, Batthew and his best friend must solve the case within three days – and possibly uncover what happened to his parents. This adventure story will have readers aged 9+ cheering for its unusual hero.

This fast-paced, fragrant and very twisty mystery, the first in a new series, will delight readers who love a wonderfully imagined world, a ripping adventure and a fiendish whodunnit. I can’t wait for the next book! — Kate O’Mara
