The Wilderness Society has announced the shortlist for the 2019 Environment Award for Children’s Literature.

This award is presented annually to fiction and nonfiction books that ‘foster a love of wild places and wildlife in young Australians’ and ‘encourage a sense of responsibility for our natural world’.

Here are the shortlisted books for each category…

Picture fiction

• More and More and More by Ian Mutch
• The All New Must Have Orange 430 by Michael Speechley
• When Water Lost Her Way by Meg Humphrys
• The Great Lizard Trek by Felicity Bradshaw and Norma MacDonald

Non-fiction

• Bouncing Back: An Eastern Barred Bandicoot Story by Rohan Cleave and Coral Tulloch
• Australian Birds by Matt Chun
• My Australia by Julie Murphy

Fiction

• Those Sugar-Barge Kids by John Tucker
• Off the Track by Cristy Burne
• Maxi the Lifeguard: The Stormy Protest by Trent Maxwell, David Lawrence and Peter Baldwin
