Clunes Booktown Festival is back on 22-23 March with a huge program of author talks, writers’ workshops, a free Kids Village and thousands of old and new books for sale! Set in the heart of a picturesque gold hamlet, the festival covers everything from cosy crime to romantasy, journalism, history, music, comedy writing and more. Readings will be there with a range of new books and signings from all the authors at the festival.

To help you plan your weekend, here are Program Manager Angela Crocombe’s top picks for this year's festival!

You Gotta Laugh: Celebrating Humour Writing

Sample three of the hilarious books shortlisted for the inaugural John Clarke Prize for Humour Writing. John’s daughter Lorin Clarke (Would That Be Funny?) will discuss the ups and downs of comedic writing with Sam Elkin (Detachable Penis), Gabiann Marin (The Medusa Situation) and Robert Skinner (I’d Rather Not). Laughs are guaranteed!

A Feast for Foodies

Calling all food lovers! Professional foodie Jess Ho (Raised by Wolves), chef Helly Raichura (The Food of Bharat), and ASRC founder Kon Karapanagiotidis (Philoxenia: A Seat at My Table) will discuss how food shapes their lives, the thrilling contrasts between restaurant cuisine and home cooking, the vital role of sustainability, and the role food plays in building community. Hosted by Readings’ own Chris Gordon, this event is a must for all foodies!

Legends: Brian Castro and Pi.O.

Join legendary Australian poet Pi.O. (The Tour) and author Brian Castro (Chinese Postman) for an inspiring discussion as they reflect on 50 years of publishing. Both from migrant backgrounds and winners of the Patrick White Award, they will share their incredible journeys in conversation with Readings Chairman Mark Rubbo.

Truth Telling: New Perspectives on Australian History

In this eye-opening session, authors Kate Grenville (Unsettled: A Journey Through Time and Place) and Jane Harrison (The Visitors), along with historians Clare Wright (Näku Dhäruk: The Bark Petitions) and Amanda Laugesen (Australia in 100 Words), will uncover the truths behind Australia's colonial myths. Guided by Barry Golding, this session promises to challenge perceptions and spark meaningful conversations.

Spinning Discs: Writing about Music

Music has the ability to be both universal and deeply personal. How do you capture such an intimate experience in writing? Dive into this electrifying session with Kirsten Krauth (Almost a Mirror & The Kylie Playlist), Thuy On (The Kylie Playlist), and Jordan Prosser (Big Time), as they spin their musical musings. Expertly mixed by RRR Breakfaster Daniel Burt, this event promises to be a captivating exploration of music and words!

Sustainability in a Changing Climate

This thought-provoking session will feature Gardening Australia's Costa Georgiadis (Costa’s Garden: Flowers), Milkwood's Kirsten Bradley (The Milkwood Permaculture Living Handbook), and permaculture co-founder David Holmgren who together will explore the challenges of our rapidly changing climate and unpack ways to adapt our gardens and lifestyles in an increasingly uncertain world.
