Three of our booksellers share some of the LGBTQIA+ books they've read, loved, and highly recommend.

Aurelia recommends Milk Fed by Melissa Broder

Milk Fed is an absolute feast of every delight and pleasure the world has to offer. When Rachel, a non-practicing Jew who has made intensive diets and cardio exercise her religion, meets Miriam, an Orthodox Jewish woman intent upon feeding her, Rachel suddenly experiences a world in which indulging your every desire is nothing to be ashamed of. Embarking on a bizarre, carnal journey of food, religion and sex, this is a story of nourishing yourself physically, sexually and religiously. I fell in love immediately and hungered for more when I finished.

Molly recommends four fantastic books to add to your reading lists

Empathy by Hoa Pham

This is sci-fi at its most literary - taking the idea of empathy as a solution to all of society's problems to its logical and nebulous conclusion. The prose is lucid, strange and beautiful.

Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson

I came to this classic quite late, and was taken off-guard by its humour and joy for life. A beautiful, and sometimes tragic, exploration of what it is to be unequivocally queer in a society which is unable to accept that.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson

This is one of my favourite series of all time - where the main character is truly the cutthroat genius that the author professes. It is a brutal takedown of colonial empires, and all the cultural and social oppression inherent to those regimes.

Lucie recommends Stars in Their Eyes by Jessica Walton &

A queer, intersectional meet-cute set at a Con? SIGN. ME. UP.

I can definitely say I was not disappointed by this beautiful graphic novel. The characters are sweet and funny and I had the best time reading about them. If you are looking for a heartwarming and fun read, look no further than Stars in Their Eyes. Plus, it’s Australian – so you’ll be supporting local creators when you do!
