Our August 2024 bestsellers

Catapulting straight to the top of our bestsellers this month, replacing the ever-popular All Fours, is a title our reviewer says is 'one of the most important books published here in many years' – The Men Who Killed the News by Australian journalist Eric Beecher.

Other first-timers to the list were some outstanding fiction and crime fiction including: Woo Woo by Ella Baxter, a darkly funny, pyrotechnic and deeply unsettling novel; the chilling new mystery from Margaret Hickey, The Creeper; The Echoes by Evie Wyld, a story about the weight of the past and the promise of the future; bestselling author Daniel Silva's latest instalment in his Gabriel Allon spy thriller series, A Death in Cornwall; and There are Rivers in the Sky by Booker-shortlisted author Elif Shafak.

Lastly, there are a couple of noteworthy nonfiction books: The Shortest History of Music by Andrew Ford, the fascinating story of why music is vital to the human experience; and The Soul: A History of the Human Mind by Paul Ham, which embarks on a journey to restore the idea of the soul to the human story and to show how belief in, and beliefs arising from, the soul/mind have animated and driven the history of humankind.
