The Australian Crime Writers Association has announced the 2017 shortlists for the Ned Kelly Awards for the best in Australian crime writing.

Here are the shortlists in each category:

Best Fiction

• The Golden Child by Wendy James
• An Isolated Incident by Emily Maguire
• Police at the Station and They Don’t Look Friendly by Adrian McKinty
• The Rules of Backyard Cricket by Jock Serong
• Out of the Ice by Ann Turner

Best first fiction

• Burn Patterns by Ron Elliott
• The Dry by Jane Harper
• Only Daughter by Anna Snoekstra
• The Love of a Bad Man by Laura Elizabeth Woollett
• Goodwood by Holly Throsby
• Something for Nothing by Andy Muir

Best true crime

• Code of Silence by Colin Dillon
• Roger Rogerson by Duncan McNab
• Getting Away With Murder by Duncan McNab
• The Drowned Man by Brendan James Murray
• Denny Day by Terry Smyth
• Murder at Myall Creek by Mark Tedeschi QC
