Meet the bookseller with Yasmin Baker
In this Meet the Bookseller blog, we chat with Yasmin Baker, the manager at Readings Doncaster. She tells us what she loves about the job, her taste in books and what's next on her reading list.
Why did you decide to work in books?
Books are such a huge part of my life and have been since I was young. I couldn't imagine a world without books and stories and words, so I figured why don't I pursue it as my career? I feel very blessed to be working in such an incredible industry and I am so passionate about reading. It never feels like I am at work when I'm in a bookshop.
What is your favourite part of your job?
My favourite part about my job is that I get to talk about books all day, everyday. I love when a customer comes into the shop who has just read something I loved and we get to gush about it, or I get someone who has just found reading and I get to help them choose their next favourite book. Another favourite part of my job is my team, I have the best team in the world and I love working alongside them!
What is the hardest question a customer has asked you in the bookshop?
One of my favourite customer questions is when someone comes in and simply says "the cover is blue" or "it has a woman on the cover", because then I get to become a detective and delve deep into the book world to find what they are looking for. I love finding the correct book from as little description as possible – it makes me and the customer happy!
If you were cursed to be trapped inside the world of a book, which one would you pick – and why?
I'm sorry to be that girl, but pleasseeeeeeee put me into the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses so I can meet Azriel.
Describe your taste in books.
My tastes in books are a little all over the place. I love a high fantasy, something that I can get completely lost in; I also really enjoy contemporary fiction, romance, biographies and personal development.
Tell us about a book that changed the way you think.
The Mountain is You by Brianna Wiest – an absolutely incredible book to make you look at how your thought patterns control aspects in your life. Highly recommend.
What books are sitting on your bedside table right now?
I am actually about to start The Poppy War trilogy by R.F Kuang again. I never got past the first book when I read it a few years ago and I want to finish the entire series now.
