Introducing our event program for April
In the lead up to Mother’s Day in early May, we’re getting together to talk about all things motherhood and celebrate two new anthologies featuring women writing about their experiences of being – and not being – a mother. Mothers and Others will be launched at our Carlton shop on Monday 13 April and Mothermorphosis at our Hawthorn shop on Sunday 19 April.
If you’re more interested in politics, economics or Australian studies come along to see Father Bob launch John Wright’s Where Did Fair Go? at Readings Carlton on Wednesday 8 April. Let Tony Windsor surprise you with stories from his 22-year political career at Readings Hawthorn on Monday 13 April, or join us on Wednesday 22 April at Readings Carlton for the launch of Griffith Review 48: Enduring Legacies, which explored the consequences of Australia’s involvement in war.
Foodies and art lovers will appreciate our two events at Crabapple Kitchen in Hawthorn – Paul West will share tales and recipes from River Cottage Australia over a two-course dinner and a glass of wine on Monday 20 April, and on Friday 1 May over lunch Sasha Grishin will discuss John Wolseley: Land Marks III and the important contribution Wolseley’s art has made to Australia’s identity.
Little ones will adore the sweet new picture book Too Much for Turtle by Cat Rabbit and Isobel Knowles. We are delighted to have the authors and illustrators with us for a very special story time for children under 6 years old on Saturday 18 April at Readings Carlton.
If an afternoon of craft and wine appeals, Meet Me at Mike’s Pip Lincolne will host a workshop at Readings St Kilda on Wednesday 22 April to celebrate her wonderful new book Craft for the Soul: How to Get the Most Out of Your Creative Life.
We’re really looking forward to the second instalment of the monthly Kill Your Darlings First Book Club looking at Bad Behaviour, an unflinching debut memoir that’s already a Readings’ favourite for 2015. Kill Your Darlings’ online editor Veronica Sullivan will be in conversation with the author of Bad Behaviour and KYD’s Editor-in-Chief, Rebecca Starford. Drinks will be provided by the Beer Gypsies.
Finally, for your diary – on Monday 11 May we’re delighted to have Readings’ managing director Mark Rubbo in conversation with author Helen Garner at the Church of all Nations. These two people have changed the way Australians appreciate writers and writing, and it’s sure to be a fascinating conversation. All proceeds from this event will be donated to The Readings Foundation.
