Interviews with our work experience students
Over the next few weeks we’re participating in a work experience program with students from high schools across Melbourne. Here, Hespa Broomhall tells us what she likes to read, and why.
How would you describe your taste in books?
My taste in books varies, but mainly I enjoy action and sci-fi books with a bit of romance on the side. I like to read YA and adult books.
Tell us about one of your favourite books ever?
One of my favourite books has to be Gone by Michael Grant. The first book in a series of six, Gone kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through, but the story wasn’t too action packed that it forgot to focus on characters too. I first heard about this book in Grade 6, when my friend recommended I read it. At that point, I wasn’t into many action or sci-fi books, so thought I wouldn’t enjoy it. I was very wrong!
Do you think it’s important to still read classics?
Although some of them can put me to sleep, classics should still be read as they probably influenced the book you are reading right now. Plus, even if they are older than your grandparents, they might still be relatable and enjoyable. I say give them a go.
What is a book you’d love to see made into a film? Who would play the lead character?
A book I would LOVE to see made into a film is Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. Adorable yet hilarious, I reckon it would make for an amazing romcom. As for who would play the main characters… I think we should leave that up to the filmmakers.
Do you read young adult fiction? Why/why not?
I used to read a lot of YA fiction, but I’ve been moving away from them recently. Although they are always an enjoyable read, I feel as though they can be very similar, and I haven’t found a book that isn’t either set dystopian future where a young girl discovers she has the power to change the world, or a ‘shy skinny boy falls in love with mysterious beautiful girl’ romance for a while now.
