Genre new releases you don't want to miss

Whether you’re a lover of magical worlds, intriguing mysteries, rollercoaster romances, or — like me — all of the above, there’s a new book waiting to be your next favourite! So if you’re struggling to choose your next read, here’s a round of up of my favourite new releases.

Fantasy

The North Wind by Alexandria Warwick

Personally, I always have a soft spot for retellings of Beauty and the Beast and the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone, and this is new release is both!

For three hundred years, the Shade, a magical barrier that protects the land of Edgewood from the Deadlands beyond, has been weakening. Only one thing can stop the Shade’s fall: the blood of a mortal woman bound in wedlock to the North Wind, a dangerous immortal whose heart is said to be as frigid as the land he rules. The time has come to choose his bride, and when the North Wind sets his eyes on Wren’s sister, Wren will do anything to save her — even if it means sacrificing herself. But mortal or not, Wren won’t go down without a fight.

Crime

Death of a Foreign Gentleman by Steven Carroll

This new novel from Steven Carroll promises to delight and intrigue fans of the golden age of detective fiction. Set in Cambridge in 1947, Death of a Foreign Gentleman follows Detective Sergeant Stephen Minter as he investigates the sudden death of a German philosopher lecturing at the university. Minter's investigation unearths the deeply problematic past of the former-Nazi, leading the Jewish detective to grapple with morality and justice in the cynical and indifferent post-war world.

From one of Australia's finest, critically-acclaimed writers, Death of a Foreign Gentleman is a playful mixture of detective story and literary fiction that fans of Agatha Christie or Kerry Greenwood should be sure to pickup!

Historical

Saltblood by Francesca de Tores

This sweeping adventure follows the life of Mary Read, one of the most infamous women from the golden age of piracy. Mary led a double life from childhood, disguising herself as a boy to claim the inheritence of her dead brother and then to find work with the English navy. But her name became notorious when her thirst for adventure led her to reinvent herself again and take to the sea as a pirate.

This book will be well worth the read whether you're a fan of historical epics, or like me, your appetite for pirate stories was whet by the cult favourite show, Our Flag Means Death. Saltblood is a wild adventure, weaving an intoxicating tale of gender and survival, passion and loss, journeys and transformation.

Romance

Collide by Bal Khabra

When Summer Preston's professor issues her with an ultimatum, she finds herself on an unexpected collision course with hockey captain, Aiden Crawford. Summer can't stand his blase approach to life, and Aiden doesn't understand her uptight, scheduled one. They are off to a rocky start, and provoking each other - it turns out - is what they do best. But, as all romance readers know, bickering eventually turns into something more...

This is a fun and sweet new romance for fans of grumpy x sunshine and forced proximity tropes, from debut author Bal Khabra.
