Five sapphic must-reads for teens

I’m back with another YA post for Pride month. This time, I’m focusing on sapphic books and I have some great ones for you! Be prepared to ‘add to cart’ after reading about these glorious titles.

She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott

If you love romcoms, rollerskating and first kisses in libraries, then this adorable book is for you! Plus just look at that cover!

Alex Blackwood is a little bit headstrong, with a dash of chaos and a whole lot of flirt. Molly Parker has everything in her life totally in control, except for her complete awkwardness. She knows she’s in love with the impossibly cool Cora Myers. She just … hasn’t actually talked to her yet.

When the girls’ paths cross unexpectedly, and Alex discovers Molly’s hidden crush, they realise they might have a common interest after all. As the two embark on their five-step plans to get their girls to fall for them, though, they both begin to wonder if maybe they’re the ones falling … for each other.

Bruised by Tanya Boteju

Speaking of gorgeous covers… I was drawn to Bruised by the cover, but the blurb made me buy it!

To Daya Wijesinghe, a bruise is a mixture of comfort and control. Since her parents died in an accident she survived, bruises have become a way to keep her pain on the surface of her skin so she doesn’t need to deal with the ache deep in her heart.

So when chance and circumstances bring her to a roller derby bout, Daya is hooked. The deeper Daya immerses herself into the world of roller derby, though, the more she realizes it’s not the simple physical pain-fest she was hoping for. Her rough-and-tumble teammates and their fans push her limits in ways she never imagined, bringing Daya to big truths about love, loss, strength, and healing.

The Monster of Her Age by Danielle Binks

This #LoveOzYA title is a must read for film buffs who love horror movies and meet-cutes!

Ellie Marsden was born into the legendary Lovinger acting dynasty. Granddaughter of the infamous Lottie Lovinger, as a child Ellie shared the silver screen with Lottie in her one-and-only role playing the child monster in a cult horror movie. The experience left Ellie deeply traumatised and estranged from people she loved.

Now seventeen, Ellie has returned home to Hobart for the first time in years. Lottie is dying and Ellie wants to make peace with her before it’s too late. Then Ellie meets Riya, a girl who she might be able to show her real self to, and last comes to understand her family’s legacy - and her own part in it.

For the skater kids: Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth

If you love a sarcastic protagonist who’s also Irish!! then this one is for you. But have tissues ready.

When Aideen agrees to help ambitious class swot Maebh Kowalska deal with her crazy workload, she doesn’t expect to end up reluctantly pushing Maebh down the stairs. With this, Aideen becomes the school ‘fixer’: any problem a student has, Aideen will sort it out, from stealing confiscated mobiles to breaking into parties. All she asks for is a favour in return.

But Aideen’s own life is a mess - her mam’s drinking again, her BFF Holly is avoiding her and she’s skipping school. Spending more time with the uptight (but annoyingly cute) Maebh and chatterbox Kavi, Aideen starts to wonder: can every problem be solved?

Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar

Fake dating? Grumpy/sunshine trope? Sign me up! Get ready to fall in love with Hani and Ishu.

Everyone likes Hani Khan - she’s easy going and one of the most popular girls at school. But when she comes out to her friends as bisexual, they don’t believe her, claiming she can’t be bi if she’s only dated guys. Panicked, Hani blurts out that she’s in a relationship… with a girl her friends can’t stand - Ishu Dey.

Ishu is the polar opposite of Hani. An academic overachiever, she hopes that becoming head girl will set her on the right track for university. Her only problem? Becoming head girl is a popularity contest and Ishu is hardly popular. Pretending to date Hani is the only way she’ll stand a chance of being elected. Despite their mutually beneficial pact, they start developing real feelings for each other.
