Every song on Taylor Swift's 1989, ranked
Hello. I am a Taylor Swift fan and I spent last night listening to her new album. Now I am here to make some unscientific, non-expert snap judgements about her music. (To be fair and equal, I am only considering those songs that appear on both the standard and deluxe edition of the album).
Here is every song on 1989, ranked in order from best to worst:
-
Wildest Dreams: I may be alone in my love for this one (it’s been called ‘the work of a Lana Del Rey lyric generator’ by one critic) but when listening to the album last night, it was the song I kept coming back to. I love Taylor’s breathy ‘ohhh ahhhh’.
-
Blank Space: So good, from beginning to end. Has just the right undercurrent of playful hostility.
-
Out of the Woods: Awesome, upbeat and addictive.
-
Shake It Off: Previous repeated listening of this one means it’s a little unfair to compare to the fresh, shiny new songs, but it holds up. Still great.
-
This Love: Soft and lovely, the gentlest song on a very poppy album.
-
I Know Places: I like this one a lot. It gets better the more I listen to it.
-
Clean: I was really into this one the first time I heard it, but enjoyed it a little less on second, third and fourth listenings.
-
Bad Blood: Adore the opening, and it has a great, angry beat throughout. It’s almost one of my favourites, but just not quite there.
-
I Wish You Would: A solid song, and a good one for a running playlist.
-
All You Had To Do Was Stay: Fun and poppy, but now we’re getting into the more forgettable songs.
-
Welcome to New York: See above.
-
How You Get The Girl: Meh.
- Style: Blurgh. Don’t like it. It feels a little too generic and just didn’t grab me in amongst more interesting songs.
