Diverse representation in books of all genres is incredibly important, so for Trans Day of Visiblity we've done a round-up of thoughtful and fun books which are a great, age-appropriate way to introduce kids to the gender spectrum.

Whether they're a young person grappling with their own gender identity or you want to help them better understand those around them, these books help break down gender stereotypes, explain pronouns and encourage readers young and old to live as their authentic selves.

All the Colours of the Rainbow

Rae White, illustrated by Sha'an d'Anthes

A gentle look at gender diversity and acceptance by non-binary transgender poet Rae White, with illustrations from award-winning artist Sha'an d'Anthes.

Jem is a kid who sometimes loves wearing yellow dresses and sometimes loves wearing blue jeans. They feel like a girl when searching for bugs and lizards in the rain, and like a boy when running around under the sun. And when there's a rainbow in the sky, they feel like a boy and a girl, like both and neither.

Some adults in Jem's life only want to see in black and white, leaving Jem confused about what choices they have, until Mum helps them with a different and wonderful way of seeing the world.

The Pronoun Lowdown

Nevo Zisin

Everyone deserves to have their identity affirmed by their friends, families, and the world through which they move. The Pronoun Lowdown celebrates trans and gender diverse identities, in all their fluid and imperfect perfection!

Woven together with author Nevo Zisin’s own pronoun journey, this colourful hardback sheds light on the complicated history of gender around the world, in language and across time. Nevo shares their ideas for how young trans and gender diverse folk might begin to navigate their identities, as well as simple suggestions for friends and family on how to provide the best support possible. And, as well as Nevo’s own anecdotes, these pages also salute the tireless work of other LGBTQIA+ trailblazers and activists – without whom this joyous book could never exist.
