Andrew Sean Greer wins the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
Andrew Sean Greer has been awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel, Less.
Arthur Less is a failed novelist about to turn 50. So when he’s invited to his ex-boyfriend’s wedding, he has no choice but to accept a series of other invitations to half-baked literary events around the world.
Throughout his travels, he will almost fall in love in Paris, almost fall to his death in Berlin, barely escape to a Moroccan ski chalet from a Saharan sandstorm, accidentally book himself as the (only) writer-in-residence at a Christian Retreat Center in Southern India, and encounter, on a desert island in the Arabian Sea, the last person on Earth he wants to face.
Less is a scintillating satire of the American abroad, and a bittersweet romance of chances loss. The Pulitzer judges commented: ‘A generous book, musical in its prose and expansive in its structure and range, about growing older and the essential nature of love.’
The two finalists in the fiction category were Hernan Diaz (In the Distance) and Elif Batuman (The Idiot).
Other winning books from this year’s Pulitzer Prizes include…
- Locking Up Our Own by James Forman (General Nonfiction)
- Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser (Biography)
- The Gulf by Jack E. Davis (History)
This year, Kendrick Lamar also made history by becoming the first rapper to win the Music category. The Pulitzer judges described Lamar’s award-winning album, DAMN. as: ‘A virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.’
Congratulations to all the winners and finalists across all categories.
