An update from the Doncaster Middle Fiction Book Club

We checked in with Sam Kelly, the tour-de-force behind our Doncaster store’s Middle Fiction Book Club, to hear all about what the club has been reading, what’s coming up, and which illustrious authors they just may have been visited by.

If Young Adult is more your style, Readings Doncaster is also looking at starting a Young Adult Book Club. More info below.

Readings Doncaster Middle Fiction Book Club

The Doncaster Middle Fiction book club was absolutely star-struck last Friday night when we were lucky enough to have the award-winning author and illustrator Judith Rossell join us. Judith came to the club to talk about her series, Stella Montgomery, in what was our most attended book club yet!

Not only did we get all our questions answered, we also got a look at some of the inspiration behind Judith’s books; like the real book that inspired Stella’s atlas, and a very old cookbook describing the most elaborate ‘simple picnic’ menu any of us had ever heard. The highlight, though, had to be the portfolio of Judith’s original illustrations. The eyes of some of our budding illustrators absolutely lit up when she showed us!

We are extraordinarily lucky to have another author coming to our next session on 2 August. Nova Weetman will be joining us to discuss her latest book, Sick Bay, and hopefully answer a few question about her other books, such as The Secrets We Keep, which is already a fan favourite in our club.

Readings Doncaster Young Adult Book Club

In other news, Readings Doncaster is starting a new Young Adult (YA) book club for teens aged 14–19. The club will be meeting on the first Friday of each month from 6pm to 7pm, and the first session will be on 4 October, 2019.

Our first book is going to be Highway Bodies by Alison Evans, but after this first session, the books will be determined by the attendees and moderators. Like the middle fiction book club, each session will cost only $5 per person, per session. The club will be run by some of our Readings YA specialist book nerds who are extremely eager to share their favourites in the genre and nerd out!

If you are interested, please send us an email at [email protected]. We can’t wait to get started!

Sam Kelly works as a bookseller at Readings Doncaster. She also runs the Doncaster middle fiction book club.
