To the Ice by Thomas Tidholm, Anna-Clara Tidholm (illus.) & Julia Marshall (trans.)
This gorgeous little hardback is a unique adventure story in a snow – and ice-encrusted world, one so different from our own. Translated from Swedish, the story is about three children, Jack, Max, and Ida, who are out playing in the melting snow one day and accidentally drift off on an ice floe. They travel on the ice to a polar land and are visited by a giant penguin, find an old abandoned hut and the diary of the explorers who stayed there. They sleep under animal furs, light warm fires, and survive on fish balls for a long time. Eventually, they build themselves a boat and find their way home.
With full-colour illustrations that are absolutely exquisite, this is a magical adventure story that will be enjoyed by readers aged 7+ and would be a wonderful read-aloud for younger ages. This utter delight of a story is highly recommended!
