The newest offering from Caldecott winning author/ illustrator Jon Klassen is full of delightful musings on the minutiae of day-to-day life. The tension is apparent from the beginning: a turtle in a bowler hat declaring how much he loves his favourite standing spot. Turn the page and uh-oh, a huge rock is ominously falling. We then meet a behatted armadillo/mole creature, who warns the turtle he has a bad feeling about said spot. The dialogue between the two continues, interspersed with images of the rock continuing to fall. As the story progresses, we also meet snake and a futuristic alien creature up to no good.

Spanning five sections and 90 pages, this longer picture book is full of deadpan dialogue, potentially plausible situations and the spot-on comic timing we have come to love from Klassen. The Rock from the Sky is sure to be another favourite for those familiar with Klassen and a great introduction for families that have yet to discover his brand of unique humour. For ages 4+.
