The Lorikeet Tree by Paul Jennings
Alex is a young 15-year-old. He loves building things, and wants a kitten more than
anything. His twin sister, Emily, often feels twice her age, especially now that their father is terminally ill and the future is looking bleak. As a school project Emily writes a memoir, this book, and describes a year of unrequited love, loneliness, grief, and strength. It is also a love letter to nature, our native wildlife, and the world around us.
This is not a story for younger readers, as there are scenes that may be distressing, but it is simply written and accessible, which could make it perfect for those aged 12+ who prefer a realistic story that isn’t too challenging.
